“You gotta get visible!”
“Just put yourself out there!”
“Time to get outta your comfort zone!”
File these under things I’d love to never hear again. I know people mean well when they say them but they are not helpful pieces of advice at all.
As an introvert, you probably shut down when you hear it. It’s like telling a 3 year old to calm down when they’re upset.
This unhelpful advice just leads to more mindset blocks because you hear it and you think “why is it so hard though?!” And you know what, that advice wasn’t meant for introverts either.
It’s ok to do things differently in your business.
Simply put, because of our ability to overcomplicate everything. It’s a gift, I know.
But really, it’s also because most of the advice out there wasn’t made for you. It’s made for hustle culture which most introverts simply cannot be a part of. The whole idea of hustling just sounds exhausting, doesn’t it? And you know what else? People are over hustling … even non-introverts.
There’s no need for it. You can do things your way and here’s why. This is your life. This is your business. This is your energy. No one else gets to define that.
I know it’s easy to let all the advice get into your head. I’ve been there too. But you will never feel as good about your business as you will when it fits into your life.
You won’t have to force yourself to market your biz in a way that doesn’t feel right to you. You won’t have to be on several platforms. You won’t have to stare at a blinking cursor trying to figure out what blog post to write next. Things will start to come naturally to you and it won’t feel forced.
Sooo, what’s next? How do you figure out your life-friendly marketing plan?
This one is short & sweet. I want you to write down whatever comes to mind as a hard pass. We’ve all got ’em. Even if there are methods you’ve never tried but you already know that it’s not your thing. Jot it down.
Get those nos out of your head so they don’t occupy the space anymore.
What are those marketing methods that are enjoyable to you? I know there’s gotta be something there. If you feel completely stuck, here’s a quick little exercise that may help.
Think about your personal life. How do you like to communicate? In-person, text (written), phone (audio), or Facetime (video). I’m very much a texter so most of my content is written. I like creating a little audio content too even though I hate talking on the phone.
This exercise is not the be all end all BUT it gives you a good place to start.
Write down anything that sounds like a yes to you. You’re not gonna dive into all of them at the same time so don’t worry about it feeling overwhelming. We’ll get to that in a bit.
(if it’s something you’re considering but not ready to commit, it can go on a maybe list for way later)
Now that you have your yes list, you can start to divide it up because you’re not gonna just dive into all of them at the same time. Here’s what I would do:
Start going through your yes list and give each method a rating (maybe like 1-3) based on the ROI – and I don’t just mean monetary ROI. I mean energetic ROI. Are there any that just bring you to life?!
Financial ROI is ok to go off of too but it shouldn’t be the only thing. If you’re getting a lot of $$ ROI from a method that completely drains you, sorry to say but it’s not working well.
Ok so, I would choose 1-2 methods to start with for your marketing plan because it can get very overwhelming very fast if you’re wearing all the marketing hats. Which methods you choose would be the ones that light you up the most, that take the least amount of energy to use.
The last step I wanna throw in is think about how you can repurpose your content. If one of your methods is blogging, you can easily repurpose a blog into social media content, email content, even audio content (turn your blog into a podcast with you reading your posts).
This can help you maximize the impact of your marketing without spreading yourself too thin.
